Then Annie adds handles, a knob, spout or even "ears".

From wheel to slab to finish

If the piece is basically round, it was likely started on the wheel.

Those can be altered in shape and form while still soft. 
The application of handles, spouts, impressions and other embellishments  come shortly thereafter.
